Upon arriving in Israel, Javier Milei declared his intention to move Argentina’s embassy to Jerusalem. The 53-year-old president was warmly greeted by Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz at Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv. His plan to move the embassy to west Jerusalem has been warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with whom he is set to meet on Wednesday to discuss deepening ties between the two countries. After arriving, Milei visited the Western Wall in East Jerusalem’s historic Old City. His announcement has been strongly condemned by the Palestinian group Hamas, who view it as a violation of international law. Milei, known for his fiery speeches and wild sideburns, has described himself as an “anarcho-capitalist” and has studied Jewish scripture despite being raised in a Catholic family. Milei, who is set to visit Rome and meet with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Pope Francis, previously criticized his fellow Argentinian but has toned down his rhetoric more recently.
