A Maldivian court has overturned the conviction of former President Abdulla Yameen and cancelled his 11-year prison sentence, just days before the nation’s parliamentary elections. The High Court deemed Yameen’s 2022 trial unfair and ordered a new trial, stating that the lower court ruling was unjust. The decision, broadcast live, was made in the midst of Yameen fielding candidates for the upcoming parliamentary election under a new political party he formed while in prison.

Yameen was initially convicted on bribery charges for allegedly accepting a bribe to lease an islet for tourism development during his presidency from 2013 to 2018. However, the recent ruling overturned the verdict, citing procedural irregularities, and ordered a retrial on charges of bribery and money laundering. Yameen also faces separate bribery charges in court. His co-accused, businessman Yusuf Naeem, who supposedly paid the $1 million bribe, was also released.

After serving time in the high-security Maafushi Prison, Yameen was placed under house arrest following the victory of his ally in the presidential elections in September. The former leader, known for his close ties with China, implemented various infrastructure projects during his presidency. The Maldives is preparing for its parliamentary election on Sunday.
