Rights groups have condemned Israel’s decision to relocate Palestinians to a small, desolate area in the south, referred to as a “safe zone,” as another displacement and oppression of the Palestinian people. Conditions in this area, called al-Mawasi, are harsh and residents are left without access to vital services from international aid organizations. In addition, Israeli forces have bombed areas where Palestinians have sought shelter, raising doubts about the safety of this designated “safe zone.” The question remains: can this area truly protect civilians from harm, or will it become another “zone of death,” as one UNICEF official has warned? The topic is discussed by Tom McRae with guests including Juliette Touma from UN Refugee and Works Agency for Palestine refugees, Mukesh Kapila, former UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, and Hisham A Hellyer, Senior Associate Fellow in International Security Studies.
