The president of an Ivy League university resigned on Saturday following criticism after a congressional hearing on the rise of anti-Semitism on US campuses. The University of Pennsylvania President, Elizabeth Magill, “voluntarily tendered her resignation,” according to the university’s board of trustees chair Scott Bok. Additionally, Bok himself stepped down. Magill was among three leaders of elite universities who received backlash after they gave evasive answers during the hearing when asked if students who call for the “genocide of Jews” on their campuses violate codes of student conduct. The blowback was intense, with lawmakers and donors calling for the removal of the university presidents. The surge in anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim hate crimes in the US, particularly on university campuses, has sparked a broader debate about the boundaries of freedom of speech and deeply offensive language.
