The proposed “Safety of Rwanda Bill” in the UK aims to allow the controversial deportation scheme to Rwanda to move forward despite the UK Supreme Court’s ruling that it is unlawful. The emergency legislation is designed to bypass certain provisions of the Human Rights Act and grant courts the authority to disregard any injunction from the European Court of Human Rights to block flights.

The bill comes after the UK Home Secretary signed a new treaty with Rwanda regarding the treatment of asylum seekers and migrants sent there. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak believes that the new law will control borders, deter dangerous journeys, and end legal challenges in the courts.

The Rwanda plan is a central part of Sunak’s immigration policy and is crucial to the Conservative Party’s prospects in the upcoming election. The plan involves sending asylum seekers who arrive in the UK via the English Channel to Rwanda for processing. However, the court rulings have deemed the plan unlawful due to concerns about human rights abuses in Rwanda.

Despite the legal challenges, the UK government is determined to move forward with the deportation scheme and is working to enact emergency legislation to make it possible.
