The United States conducted strikes on sites in Syria and Iraq which belonged to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated militias as a retaliation for the January 28 attack by the armed group on a military base in Jordan that killed three US soldiers and injured more than 40 others. US President Joe Biden stated that the response would not stop at IRGC targets. American and British forces also bombed Houthi bases in Yemen to degrade their ability to disrupt maritime shipping in the Red Sea. Pressure from former President Donald Trump and some Republican members of Congress urged for a direct US strike on Iran. On the Democratic side, there were calls for a strong but “proportionate” response. Biden’s response to the Jordan attack may impact his chances for re-election, as it may gain support from some but lose support from others, particularly young Democrats and Muslim and Arab Americans who criticize his administration’s policy choices related to Israel and the Middle East.
