In a crucial Asia Cup match against Afghanistan, stylish batter Kusal Mendis led the Sri Lankan team to a total of 291-8 in Lahore. Despite missing out on a century by just eight runs, Mendis played a crucial role in anchoring the innings for his team.

Choosing to bat after winning the toss at the Gaddafi Stadium, Sri Lanka got off to a solid start with an opening partnership of 63 runs between Pathum Nissanka (41) and Dimuth Karunaratne (32). However, Sri Lanka faced a middle-order collapse after reaching 186-3, losing four wickets in the span of 41 runs. This included the dismissal of Mendis, who was run out thanks to a deflection by Rashid Khan. Mendis fell short of his ground at the non-striker’s end.

Despite the setback, Dunith Wellalage played a crucial innings, scoring an unbeaten 39-ball 33 with a six and three boundaries. He shared a vital 64-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Maheesh Theekshana (28).

In the bowling department, fast bowler Gulbadin Naib was Afghanistan’s standout performer, finishing with figures of 4-60, including the wicket of Theekshana off the final delivery.

Both Sri Lanka and Afghanistan needed a win in this match to secure a spot in the Super Four stage from Group B. Bangladesh has already progressed from this group.
