Argentina Declines Membership in BRICS Alliance, Citing Business and Economy Factors

Argentina’s newly elected President Javier Milei has made the decision not to join the BRICS bloc of developing economies, fulfilling a promise he made during his campaign. Instead, Milei plans to pursue closer ties with Western countries, moving away from the previous administration’s efforts to build ties with other developing nations. This shift in foreign policy aligns with Milei’s self-described anarcho-libertarian views and his goal of pursuing greater alignment with “free nations of the West” such as Israel and the US. Milei has also stated that Argentina will seek to intensify bilateral ties with BRICS countries in order to increase trade and investment flows, without joining the group. Despite Milei’s efforts to implement radical economic reforms and deregulation, he is facing pushback from the country’s powerful organized labor groups as Argentina grapples with high inflation.
