UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a warning about the lack of protection for civilians in Gaza and has called on the UN Security Council to push for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

In an emergency meeting of the UNSC, Guterres highlighted the devastating impact of the conflict, with over 17,170 deaths in Gaza, mostly women and children, and called for urgent action to end the suffering of the people of Gaza. He also urged the council to spare no effort in securing a ceasefire for the protection of civilians and the delivery of life-saving aid.

The conflict has seen relentless Israeli bombardment and ground invasions of Gaza as well as attacks by Hamas on southern Israel, resulting in significant loss of life and civilian suffering. Guterres also expressed concern for the approximately 240 people being held captive by Hamas and called for their immediate release and humane treatment.

In a rare move, Guterres invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter to bring the matter to the council’s attention, highlighting the gravity of the situation. The US, however, did not support an immediate ceasefire, citing concerns about the potential for future conflicts.

Following Guterres’ urgent letter, the United Arab Emirates prepared a draft resolution for a ceasefire, which is set to be put to a vote at the Security Council. The resolution calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the protection of civilians, and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

The situation in Gaza has been described as “catastrophic,” with widespread displacement, shortages of essential resources, and a high risk of disease. Guterres emphasized the need for all parties to comply with international humanitarian law and ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian relief.

With ongoing diplomatic efforts at the UN, the push for a ceasefire and the protection of civilians in Gaza continues as the Security Council prepares to vote on the proposed resolution.
