Sydney: Australian club cricketer takes six wickets in last over
According to French news agency AFP, an astonishing scene was witnessed during a club match in Australia when the opposing bowler dramatically snatched victory from the team chasing the target of 178 runs in 40 overs by taking four wickets in the last over.
Top scorer Surfers Paradise were chasing 178 runs and had made 174 runs for the loss of four wickets in 39 overs, needing 4 runs on the last over to win the match.
However, Captain Gierth Morgan of Modjarraba Nerang Club took away the match with an astonishing performance by taking six wickets in the last over, in which five batsmen were out caught by golden duck, leading the entire Surfers Paradise team to be out for 174 runs.
Among those who were out in the last over, the first four were caught while the last two were bowled out. Gierth Morgan took 7 wickets for just 16 runs in the match, and also remained the top scorer in batting with a quick 39 runs.
Speaking to Australian national broadcaster ABC, Gierth Morgan said that when all this happened, the umpire kept looking at me and it was completely uncertain because I had never seen anything like this before.
Previously, the record for the most wickets in an over in professional cricket was held by Neil Wagner of New Zealand, who took 5 wickets in an over against Wellington for Otago in 2011.
In 2013, Bangladeshi club cricketer Al Amin Hossain and in 2019, Indian club cricketer Abhimanyu Mithun have also taken five wickets in an over.
