The death toll from the eruption of Marapi volcano in Indonesia has risen to 22, with rescuers finding more climbers who perished near the crater. The 2,891-metre high volcano in West Sumatra erupted on Sunday, spewing ash clouds as high as 3 kilometres into the sky. Despite warnings from the Indonesia’s volcanology agency to close the area within 3 kilometres’ radius of the summit to climbers, there were still 75 climbers on the volcano when it erupted. The environment ministry and local authorities are responsible for enforcing safety warnings, according to Ahmad Basuki from the volcanology agency. The conservation agency, which issues climbing permits, stated that the permits were given after approval from several local agencies.
