UNICEF estimates that at least 17,000 children in the Gaza Strip have been left unaccompanied or separated from their families after nearly four months of Israel’s assault on the region. According to Jonathan Crickx, UNICEF’s chief of communication for the occupied Palestinian territories, nearly all children in the strip require mental health support. Tracing unaccompanied children has been difficult, as they are often brought to hospitals wounded or in shock and are unable to communicate their names. Extended families are also struggling to care for these children due to the lack of resources. UNICEF believes that almost all children in Gaza, around one million, are in need of mental health support as they exhibit symptoms of extreme anxiety, loss of appetite, insomnia, and panic. The ongoing violence has resulted in the death of over 11,500 children and has forced families to flee their homes multiple times. UNICEF has called for a ceasefire to properly assess and provide support to the affected children.
