Thousands of households are still without power following Japan’s New Year’s Day earthquake, which has now claimed 161 lives with over 100 still missing. The relief efforts are being complicated by snow, making it difficult for the more than 2,000 people still isolated due to the quake to receive help. Landslides are also a major concern in the hard-hit Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture. More than 18,000 households are without electricity and over 66,000 without water. Government shelters are also struggling to provide adequate resources, but aid is slowly improving the situation for those affected. Many are also mourning loved ones lost in the disaster, feeling the added stress and exhaustion from the ongoing aftershocks and harsh living conditions in the shelters.
