13 additional deaths in Punjab linked to pneumonia

LAHORE: The death toll from pneumonia in children continues to rise, with 13 more kids succumbing to the illness in the last 24 hours in Punjab. This brings the total number of deaths to 233 since January 1.

Official data shows that there have been 1,122 new pneumonia cases reported in Punjab in the last 24 hours, bringing the total reported cases for the year to 10,000. Lahore alone has reported 12,719 cases.

Punjab’s caretaker Health Minister Prof Javed Akram has confirmed the new cases and deaths.

The signs and symptoms of pneumonia can vary from mild to severe, depending on factors such as the type of germ causing the infection, as well as the patient’s age and overall health. Mild symptoms can be similar to those of a cold or flu, but they may last longer.

Common signs and symptoms of pneumonia may include:

  • Chest pain when breathing or coughing
  • Confusion or changes in mental awareness (seen in adults over 65)
  • Cough, which may produce phlegm
  • Fatigue
  • Fever, sweating and shaking chills
  • Lower than normal body temperature (seen in adults over 65 and those with weak immune systems)
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Shortness of breath
