The anti-corruption group that filed a complaint against Begona Gomez for alleged influence peddling and business corruption has stated that they cannot confirm the accuracy of the media reports on which the case is based. Prosecutors in Spain have requested the dismissal of the case, which led Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to announce that he is considering resigning. The Madrid prosecuting authority is appealing a court decision to investigate the complaint against Gomez, and the judge’s investigation is currently sealed. Manos Limpias, the group behind the complaint, clarified that their actions were based on journalistic reports and not politically motivated. Sanchez, who strongly denied the allegations against his wife, blamed the situation on what he called “unprecedented slander and harassment from the right and far right”. High-ranking officials from his party expressed support for Sanchez amidst the controversy, with some describing the political climate as “toxic”. If Sanchez were to resign, a new prime minister candidate could be chosen through a vote in parliament or snap elections could be called. Alternatively, Sanchez could face a confidence vote to reinforce his leadership.
