In preparation for the upcoming general elections in Pakistan, President Arif Alvi has called for an end to bitterness and the promotion of cooperation and forgiveness. His aim is to create a level playing field for all political parties involved. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) recently announced that the elections would take place in the last week of January 2024, without specifying a specific date.

Several political parties, including the JUI-F, PPP, and PTI, have expressed concerns about the timing of the elections and the lack of a level playing field. Additionally, the PML-N is preparing for the return of party leader Nawaz Sharif later this month. To address these concerns, the interim government has assured that caretakers are not aligned with any particular party and that all parties will be given equal opportunities.

During a meeting with Senator Muhammad Ali Khan Durrani at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, President Alvi emphasized the importance of free, fair, transparent, and inclusive elections. He believes that all political parties and their leaders should have equal opportunities to participate in the electoral process, as this will strengthen democracy in the country.

The president also highlighted the need for political and institutional unity to address challenges like rising inflation. He stressed the importance of ending bitterness and promoting cooperation and forgiveness among political rivals. President Alvi believes that the upcoming elections provide an opportunity to rebuild the country, and he considers political participation to be the essence of a vibrant democracy.

It is worth noting that these statements from President Alvi come at a time when the PTI, the party to which he belongs, and its leader Imran Khan face legal challenges and a state crackdown following the May 9 riots. These issues could potentially jeopardize their participation in the elections.
