Pakistan conducted a targeted strike on terrorist hideouts in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan province on Thursday morning. This was in response to Iran’s violation of Pakistani airspace less than 48 hours earlier. According to the Foreign Office, the operation, code-named ‘Marg Bar Sarmachar’, resulted in the deaths of several terrorists. Iran’s IRNA news agency reported that nine people were killed in the attack, including women and children.

This development comes after Iran launched attacks in Pakistan targeting bases for the militant group Jaish al-Adl in the border town of Panjgur. These attacks resulted in strong condemnation from Islamabad and the downgrading of diplomatic ties. In response, Pakistan undertook a series of “highly coordinated and specifically targeted precision military strikes” against the terrorist hideouts in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan province.

The statement from the Foreign Office emphasized that Pakistan has consistently shared its concerns about the safe havens and sanctuaries enjoyed by Pakistani origin terrorists within Iran. In light of credible intelligence of impending large-scale terrorist activities by these terrorists, Pakistan took action to protect its national security. The statement also stressed that Pakistan respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iran.

Following the strikes, Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar decided to cut short his visit to the World Economic Forum, and Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani also decided to return to Pakistan from Uganda. The government lodged a protest with Iranian authorities over the violation of its airspace, and China expressed willingness to mediate between Pakistan and Iran.

President Dr Arif Alvi stated that Pakistan would not compromise on its national security and territorial integrity and would take all necessary measures to defend its soil. He also emphasized the need for dialogue and mutual consultation in resolving issues between Pakistan and Iran.

These developments highlight the ongoing tensions and diplomatic exchanges between Pakistan and Iran and the implications for regional stability.
