Peres Jepchirchir and Alexander Mutiso Munyao, both from Kenya, emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s elite races at the London marathon on a day filled with emotion. Jepchirchir, the Olympic champion, set a women’s-only world record while Munyao secured a Kenyan double with his win.

The race began with a touching tribute to Kelvin Kiptum, last year’s men’s race winner, who tragically passed away in a car accident in February. Despite the somber start, the day ended on a high note, with Jepchirchir showcasing her strength ahead of the Paris Olympics where she will defend her title.

The women’s race featured a competitive field, including some of the fastest women in history. Jepchirchir crossed the finish line ahead of record holders Tigst Assefa and Joyciline Jepkosgei, breaking the women’s-only course record set by Mary Keitany in 2017.

In the men’s race, Munyao clinched a victory for Kenya, beating out veteran Kenenisa Bekele in the final stretch. Reflecting on his win, Munyao mentioned his late friend Kiptum, who inspired him to push forward.

Munyao’s win at the London Marathon may earn him a spot on Kenya’s Olympic team for Paris, but he remains humble about his chances. Regardless, his impressive performance and heartfelt dedication to his friend make him a standout in the marathon world.
