The situation in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) is reported to be “completely peaceful,” according to Information Minister Murtaza Solangi. The GB government has dismissed reports of army deployment as baseless, stating that the Pakistan Army and civil armed forces have been requisitioned only to maintain law and order during the upcoming chehlum of Imam Hussain.
However, mobile internet service has been temporarily suspended across the region due to insensitive remarks made by two clerics, which have hurt the sentiment of respective communities. The decision was made to prevent any further unrest in the area.
Solangi shared the statement released by the GB home department on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing that all roads, trade centers, business activities, and educational institutions in GB are functioning as usual. He reiterated that the Pakistan Army’s involvement is solely for maintaining law and order and ensuring the security of the procession routes and imambargahs.
Additionally, the GB home department has imposed Section 144 across the region to protect lives, property, and maintain a peaceful environment.
The unrest began on September 1 when demonstrations were held in Gilgit city and surrounding areas following derogatory remarks made by Maulana Qazi Nisar Ahmed during a protest. The protesters demanded action against the cleric, leading to disruptions and road blocks in Chilas, Astore, Gilgit, and Skardu. The government took action against the cleric and his supporters, resulting in a strike and road blocks in Skardu.
The situation has prompted the United Kingdom, Canada, and the US to advise their citizens to avoid visiting the northern areas of Pakistan due to the ongoing protests and potential disruptions.
Despite these challenges, businesses in Gilgit-Baltistan continue to operate normally, and the government is taking necessary steps to ensure law and order in the region.
