The anonymity of British police officer Martyn Blake has been lifted by a judge, as there are no immediate threats to his safety. Blake, who has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Chris Kaba, a 24-year-old Black man, will stand trial on October 2. Kaba was shot and killed by police firearms specialists in South London in 2022. The decision to name Blake has sparked protests and conversations about racism within the police force. The Metropolitan Police Federation expressed shock and concern over the decision to name Blake, emphasizing the difficult and accountable nature of the job of firearms officers. An independent review of London’s Metropolitan Police Service last year revealed institutional racism, misogyny, and homophobia within the force, calling for significant changes to be made.
