Baloch protesters ended their sit-in outside Islamabad’s National Press Club on Tuesday after a letter from the NPC to the Islamabad police requesting the removal of the camp was withdrawn following criticism. The sit-in, organized by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), was held to protest against enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings. The protesters accused the police of harassing and profiling them, as well as registering FIRs against them. The letter from the NPC to the police requested a plan to relocate the protesters to reduce difficulties for the press club, residents, and the business community. The protesters expressed dismay and said the media community has an obligation to stand with neglected voices. They also reported being under pressure to vacate the camp and being harassed and threatened by police. Baloch organizers of the protest announced that they would be heading back to Balochistan the next day and criticized the lack of attention to the issue of missing persons from political parties. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan expressed solidarity with the Baloch camp and criticized efforts to remove the camp. The NPC clarified that their request was taken out of context and viewed with suspicion, and was made due to present security concerns and the safety of the journalist community. They alleged that certain people with an agenda were trying to create a rift between the club and the protesters. The NPC stated that they always accommodate various groups and will continue providing a platform to those who need it.
