A gritty 164 by veteran opener David Warner silenced his critics and led Australia to 346-5 against Pakistan in the first Test at Perth. At the end of day one, Mitchell Marsh was unbeaten on 15 and Alex Carey not out 14, as Pakistan faced a daunting task against an inconsistent Australia attack. Despite flashes of brilliance from Pakistan’s bowlers, Warner’s near-flawless 211-ball innings included 16 fours and four sixes. After departing to Aamer Jamal, he expressed his goal of scoring runs and achieving an emotional goodbye from Test cricket at the third Test in Sydney. Warner responded to criticism saying, “People make comments, but you get on with it. You have to just go out there and score runs and today I did that.” Khurram Shahzad dropped Warner after bringing up his milestone, but he was otherwise in command until his dismissal. Prior to Warner’s performance, Khurram Shahzad dropped Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne was lbw, Steve Smith was out due to a faint edge to the diving Ahmed, and Agha Salman caught Travis Head. Despite these losses, Jamal expressed confidence and planned to get Australia out in the first hour of the next morning.
