The caretaker government of Pakistan has clarified that all political parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), are allowed to participate in the upcoming general elections. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an official statement to address the misunderstanding created by the Prime Minister’s recent interview with the Associated Press.

The ministry emphasized that the Prime Minister’s remarks were taken out of context and misreported by some media outlets. The statement highlights the following text from the interview:

“We are not pursuing anyone on a personal vendetta. But yes, we will ensure that the law is appropriately followed. If any politician, whether it’s Imran Khan or others, violates the laws of the country in terms of their political behavior, then the law must be enforced. This is not political discrimination.”

The caretaker Prime Minister also stated that fair elections can still be held even if Imran Khan or some members of his party are jailed for engaging in unlawful activities, such as vandalism and arson. He assured that those in the party who have not engaged in such activities will be allowed to participate in the political process and elections.

The Ministry’s statement reaffirms that PTI and its leaders have the freedom to contest the elections, just like any other political party. There are no obstacles or restrictions for any PTI leader to run for office or for the party to participate in the elections as a whole.

The statement further emphasizes that every citizen is equal before the law and anyone facing legal charges will go through the proper legal process. The courts are independent, and the caretaker government has no authority or intention to influence them at any level. Any person who disagrees with a court’s decision has the right to appeal and seek relief from a higher judicial forum, as guaranteed by the constitution.

The caretaker government is committed to ensuring free and fair elections. They will support the constitutional and legal framework for holding elections, and will fully comply with the orders and directions of the Election Commission of Pakistan and the independent judiciary. Upholding the integrity of the electoral process and respecting the rule of law are top priorities for the caretaker government.
