The jailed Russian opposition politician, Alexei Navalny, has been located in a penal colony north of the Arctic Circle, according to his spokeswoman. Navalny was found in the IK-3 penal colony in Kharp, 1,900 kilometers northeast of Moscow, after not being in contact with his supporters for over two weeks. His new home, known as “the Polar Wolf” colony, is considered one of the toughest prisons in Russia, with harsh conditions and a special regime in the permafrost. Navalny’s lawyer was able to see him on Monday, but his allies raised concerns about his isolation and the difficulty in accessing him. Navalny’s supporters have also expressed concerns that the Russian authorities are trying to isolate him ahead of the March presidential election. Despite the challenges he faces, Navalny remains defiant, denying the charges against him and portraying Russia’s judicial system as deeply corrupt.
