Prime Minister Netanyahu faced criticism and protests from the families of captives held by Hamas in Gaza during his speech to parliament. The families chanted for the captives to be brought home, but were disappointed when Netanyahu stated that “more time” was needed to secure their release. Netanyahu defended the need for military pressure in securing the release of hostages, and vowed to continue the fight until victory, despite the protests from the captive’s families.
The prime minister’s address followed a visit to the Gaza Strip, where he promised to escalate Israel’s assault. He emphasized that the war was far from over and dismissed speculation that the fighting might end soon. Israel’s Ministry of Finance estimated that the ongoing war could cost at least $14bn in the 2024 budget, as the conflict continues to take a heavy toll on both Palestinians and Israelis.
Throughout three months of bombardment, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than 20,674 Palestinians and the injury of 54,536, the majority of whom have been women and children.
