In the midst of the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, one man and his donkey are making a difference in the lives of many in Gaza. Jameel al-Karoubi, a 34-year-old man, has taken it upon himself to distribute clean drinking water to his neighborhood every day. His donkey, Almond, faithfully accompanies him on this mission.

Jameel used to sell vegetables from his cart before the war broke out. However, since the bombardment began, he has shifted his focus towards providing clean water to as many people as possible. Several years ago, Jameel inherited a well after his father’s passing. Now, before attending to his family’s water needs, he fills two large tanks and walks around his neighborhood, inviting his neighbors to bring their empty water containers for refill.

Living with his mother, wife, and four children, Jameel ensures that his neighbors do not go thirsty after water and electricity supplies were cut off by Israeli forces more than a week ago. He believes in standing together as one and is determined to put this belief into practice. Despite being part of a working-class family that could use the money, Jameel refuses to accept any payment for the water he distributes.

Jameel’s selfless efforts have made a significant impact on his community. People express their gratitude for his help, acknowledging that they would be lost without his assistance. They tried seeking aid from relief agencies but found them overcrowded and the water provided less than satisfactory. Jameel’s water, on the other hand, is clean and tastes better.

Although Jameel wants to extend his relief efforts beyond his neighborhood, the shelled-out streets, a result of Israeli missile attacks, make it impossible for him to maneuver his cart. Despite his family’s worries about his safety, they fully support Jameel’s mission and recognize the importance of his work.

Jameel’s youngest son, Osama, shares his father’s dedication to helping others. He highlights his father’s belief that it is their duty to assist people, even strangers. Jameel finds joy and pride in ensuring that people can go to bed at night without feeling thirsty, regardless of the dangers surrounding him.

In addition to distributing water, Jameel occasionally shares extra vegetables from his garden with the community. This generosity not only brings happiness to people but also reflects Jameel’s compassionate nature. The community appreciates his efforts and often offers food for Almond, the faithful companion, as a token of their gratitude.

Jameel pays no attention to politics and is uncertain when the war will end. Nevertheless, his primary focus is on meeting the immediate needs of his neighbors who are thirsty for clean water. As long as there is a need, Jameel will continue to be there, doing his best to provide assistance and support.
