Forty-nine Indian opposition lawmakers were suspended from the legislature for allegedly disrupting the House proceedings as they demanded a debate on a December 13 parliament security breach. This came after a total of 141 lawmakers were suspended, 95 from the lower house and 46 from the upper house since December 14. The opposition has criticized the government’s move, referring to it as a “mockery of democracy”. The security breach in question occurred when two men opened gas canisters in the lower house chamber. The move to suspend the lawmakers has been deemed as politically motivated, leading to concerns about the functioning of parliament without the opposition. The Modi government has been accused of targeting opposition leaders and using its majority to pass legislation without meaningful debate. The opposition has continued to protest against the government’s actions, accusing it of attacking Parliament and democracy.
