Gang violence continues to plague Haiti, with at least 12 bodies found in Petion-Ville near the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Gunmen looted homes in Laboule and Thomassin, prompting residents to flee and call for police assistance. Despite a surge in attacks since February, these neighbourhoods had remained peaceful until now. The victims, who were shot, were discovered on the main road and outside a fuel station.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s resignation announcement has not quelled gang activity, as they demand a transitional presidential council be formed. Gang leaders have threatened politicians and warned of a “battle” for Haiti. In addition, Haiti’s power company reported that several substations were destroyed, leaving parts of Port-au-Prince without electricity.
As the violence escalates, the United Nations, as well as the US and Canadian embassies, have withdrawn their staff. Discussions are ongoing to finalize the membership of the transition council, with hopes of an update soon. Residents are facing shortages of food and medical care amid the chaos.
