UN Experts Report Widespread Use of Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War in Sudan

A dozen UN experts have spoken out about the widespread and in some cases ethnically motivated sexual violence being used in conflict-ravaged Sudan as “a tool of war”. Forces loyal to army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan have been at war with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commanded by his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. Over 10,000 people have been killed and 6.3 million more have been forced to flee their homes. The experts called for a newly established UN fact-finding mission for Sudan to investigate the situation and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable. They warned that the scale and seriousness of the sexual violence was “grossly underreported” and urged the international community to take action.
