Remon Karam sits in the shade at Kore University in Sicily and reflects on his journey from Egypt to Italy. He made the decision to leave his home at the age of 14, without his parents’ knowledge. His departure was motivated by the desire for personal security, as well as the growing political and social tensions in his home country. After a harrowing journey by boat, he eventually found himself at an immigration center in Sicily.

Despite the challenges he faced, Remon was eventually taken in by a local couple and provided with the support and love he needed to pursue his education. He has since graduated with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree, and has become an advocate for human rights, sharing his story across Italy. While his Egyptian parents struggle to fully understand his achievements and activism, Remon knows they are happy for him.

Although he applied for Italian citizenship a year ago, Remon is still awaiting a response. But as he continues to thrive in Sicily, he remains grateful for the new life and opportunities he has found in Italy.
