Kobayashi Pharma has issued a recall for cholesterol-lowering supplements containing red yeast rice due to a potential link to kidney disease. The Japanese drugmaker is investigating four deaths and over 100 hospitalizations related to its products. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has called for a thorough investigation and reassessment of safety regulations. The company is working to confirm the cause of the illnesses and has recalled three supplements, including Beni Koji Choleste Help. The ingredient in question, red yeast rice, is believed to lower bad cholesterol but may also pose risks to kidney health. The government is monitoring the situation closely and urging prompt action from the pharmaceutical company. Additional products containing red yeast rice have also been recalled. Japan is cooperating with international agencies to address the issue.
