Overseeing the overseers: The intersection of media, law, and the Israel-Palestine conflict in Gaza

The American media has largely avoided discussing Israel’s potential genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Since the beginning of the war, the media has usually justified Israel’s actions and downplayed or denied its crimes against Palestinians. This refusal to acknowledge the ongoing genocide has real consequences as Israel continues its violent actions with impunity. However, concerned groups are taking action, seeking to hold Israel and other governments complicit in the genocide accountable. Organizations have filed lawsuits in US courts, specifically targeting the Biden administration for enabling Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Many scholars and experts agree that Israel has committed acts that meet the definition of genocide as outlined in the Genocide Convention. The legal case for the US’s complicity in this genocide is strong as well, but the government has attempted to dismiss the lawsuits on jurisdictional grounds. As evidence for the genocide continues to mount, public discussion on the topic is stifled, and those seeking to hold Israel accountable are branded as anti-Semites or terror supporters. This, coupled with extremist claims of anti-Semitism on university campuses, paints a stark picture of the media’s unwillingness to accurately report and discuss the situation.
