In the 2018 elections, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) narrowly won two NA seats against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) which captured five out of six PA seats in the district of Korangi.

KORANGI is a relatively new district in the Karachi division, having been created in 2013 by the government of the Pakistan Peoples Party. Before the 2018 elections, the district was known as a stronghold of the once-unified MQM, which had historically won all NA seats in previous general elections, aside from one seat lost to the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H) in 2002.

Following the 2018 elections, PTI managed to defeat the MQM-P candidates on two out of three NA seats with narrow margins, thanks in part to the now defunct Pak Sarzameen Party dividing the MQM-P’s vote bank. However, the MQM-P was able to retain one NA seat and five out of six provincial assembly seats in the district.

In the upcoming general elections on February 8, the MQM-P is expected to make a comeback as its main rival, the PTI, is facing difficulties after losing its electoral symbol ‘bat’ and running a less effective election campaign. The PTI’s candidates are contesting as independent aspirants.

There are a total of 87 candidates for three NA seats and 210 aspirants for seven PA seats in the district of Korangi. The population of the district is approximately 3.12 million, with 1,512,026 registered voters, including 828,134 male and 683,892 female voters.
