Israeli forces resumed their bombardment of the Gaza Strip, killing more than 180 people and wounding hundreds as a week-long truce expired. Eastern areas of Khan Younis in southern Gaza faced intense bombardment, with smoke rising into the sky. Sirens blared in southern Israel as militants fired rockets from Gaza. The Israeli military dropped leaflets urging civilians to flee, but rights groups warned that there are no safe places in Gaza.
The UN called the situation in Gaza an extreme humanitarian emergency, while the Palestinian Red Crescent said Israeli forces prohibited the entry of trucks at a crossing, exacerbating the suffering of citizens. Gaza’s government media office called for Arab and Muslim states to establish field hospitals in the enclave and provide urgent humanitarian solutions for displaced families.
Negotiations to extend the truce collapsed as each side blamed the other for the breakdown. Qatar, the United States, and Egypt were working to restore the truce, with the White House pushing for more captives to be released and more humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. Egypt also said it was working to reinstate the truce as soon as possible.
