France has joined the US and the UK in imposing sanctions on Israeli settlers accused of human rights abuses against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs announced that 28 individuals would be banned from entering France due to their role in the violence against Palestinian civilians. This decision comes as violence perpetrated by settlers against the Palestinian population has increased in recent months, and France has reaffirmed its condemnation of this unacceptable violence. The French, Polish, and German foreign ministers issued a joint statement condemning violence against Palestinians and stating that it shall be sanctioned. Additionally, France said it would seek sanctions at the European level and emphasized that colonization is illegal under international law and must stop in order to achieve a viable Palestinian state. The US and the UK have also expressed concerns about settler violence and attacks on Palestinians, with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron announcing sanctions on four Israeli nationals accused of attacking Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. The United Nations has recorded over 516 settler attacks against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since October 7, and Israel’s assault on Gaza has resulted in the deaths of thousands of people. Settler attacks often take place with Israeli security forces standing by or joining in, further escalating the violence in the region.
