PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has encouraged PML-N supremo Mian Nawaz Sharif to participate in the upcoming general elections based on his own ideology and mandate, rather than seeking support from the “administration.” The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and President Arif Alvi have agreed on February 8, 2024 as the date for the polls.
The rivalry between the Nawaz-led PML-N and the PPP has resurfaced ahead of the elections, with the PPP alleging a secret alliance between the PML-N and the current caretaker setup.
Bilawal emphasized the importance of contesting the elections on the basis of ideological differences and manifesto, urging Nawaz to ensure that the ballot is respected. He criticized the establishment and warned that the PML-N, if in power, would continue pursuing “politics of revenge and their vested interests.”
Bilawal expressed concerns over the PML-N’s stance against the 18th amendment, referring to any plans to roll it back as a “dangerous idea.” He emphasized the need for consensus-based politics and a level playing field for all political parties.
PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah dismissed Bilawal’s remarks as an attempt to attract voters in Punjab, while Ahsan Iqbal clarified that there was no plan to roll back the 18th amendment.
