China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met to discuss the competition and cooperation between the two countries. Wang emphasized that the “Taiwan independence” movement poses the biggest risk to Sino-US relations, with Sullivan highlighting the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

The meeting, held in Bangkok, Thailand, was considered an effort to maintain open lines of communication between the two countries. They discussed implementing the consensus reached at the previous meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, as well as addressing important and sensitive issues in China-US relations.

In addition to Taiwan-related issues, the officials touched on other global matters including Russia’s conflict with Ukraine, Iran, the Middle East, North Korea, the South China Sea, and Myanmar. Both parties agreed that the two presidents would maintain regular contact to provide strategic guidance on bilateral relations and promote exchanges in various areas and levels.

They also agreed to set up a call between President Xi and President Biden as part of “high-level diplomacy” efforts. Furthermore, they discussed launching a joint working group on anti-drug cooperation and establishing an intergovernmental dialogue on artificial intelligence. The officials also recognized the recent progress in resuming military-to-military communication and emphasized the importance of maintaining these channels.
