Asma Shirazi, a journalist, expressed her gratitude and faith in the justice system after the Islamabad High Court directed ARY News to publicly apologise to her for using her image in a news report unrelated to her. She described the verdict as a “landmark decision” for media professionals who face intimidation and harassment in both online and mainstream media.

Shirazi explained that the issue was brought to court after two journalists were allegedly detained for commenting on former first lady Bushra Bibi, during which the judge expressed disapproval of rumors regarding black magic associated with Imran Khan’s wife. She clarified that her name was never mentioned during the proceedings and she had written a column criticizing the then-PTI government without naming any individuals.

She stated that a baseless campaign was launched against her by a former PTI cabinet member, leading her to seek action from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) and the IHC. The court ruled in her favor, ordering ARY News to broadcast an apology and pay her damages.

The court’s verdict directed ARY News to pay Shirazi Rs50,000 in nominal damages and issue a public apology. It emphasized that news channels must adhere to Pemra laws and ensure that news is broadcast in a responsible manner. The court also affirmed the appellant’s right to seek damages under defamation law if necessary.

Shirazi hopes that the court’s decision will set a precedent for journalists in Pakistan to take legal action against defamation and harassment, and she urged the Chief Justice to introduce laws for timely hearing of defamation cases.
