The ruling party in Hungary has submitted a resolution to parliament urging the government not to support the start of talks on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. Prime Minister Viktor Orban has warned that EU leaders may not reach a consensus on this issue and has stated that the expansion policy should be based on rules and performance. The resolution also calls for a thorough assessment of how Ukraine’s potential membership would affect cohesion and agricultural policies within the EU. Orban’s meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron will address European support for Ukraine and the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Critics accuse Orban of attempting to blackmail Brussels to gain access to EU funding, and the European Commission is withholding nearly 22 billion euros from Hungary over concerns about corruption and democratic norms. Additionally, Orban has faced scrutiny for his ties to Russia amid EU sanctions over the conflict in Ukraine.
