According to media reports, a recent study conducted by scientists in China has shown that the venomous centipede, also known as the ‘Chinese Red Headed Centipede’, could potentially aid in the treatment of gout and save lives. The research, published in the Journal of Natural Products, found that centipedes contain special chemicals called alkaloids that fight against the disease.
Researchers have suggested that the chemical alkaloids in venomous centipedes can reduce inflammation and wounds in gout. Red centipedes contain 12 new alkaloid compounds, some of which possess anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic properties.
