Following a general election that saw the removal of Tuvalu’s pro-Taiwan leader, former Attorney General Feleti Teo has been appointed as the new prime minister of the Pacific Island nation. Teo was the sole candidate nominated by his 15 lawmaker colleagues and was elected without a vote. The swearing-in ceremony for Teo and his cabinet is scheduled to take place later this week.

Teo’s predecessor, Kausea Natano, had advocated for maintaining diplomatic ties with Taiwan, a position that led to his defeat in the January 26 election. The issue of Taiwan-China relations is expected to be debated by the new government, as well as the review of a defense and migration agreement with Australia. This agreement, aimed at countering China’s growing influence in the region, allows for Australian oversight of various aspects of Tuvalu’s infrastructure and security in exchange for defense assistance and migration opportunities.

Teo’s stance on Taiwan relations and the Australian agreement has not been disclosed. With a background in the fisheries industry and experience as Tuvalu’s first attorney general, Teo’s government will face crucial decisions in international relations, climate change, and telecommunications. The appointment of the new prime minister was delayed due to inclement weather that stranded several lawmakers on outer islands.

Jess Marinaccio, an assistant professor in Pacific Studies, highlighted the importance of Taiwan relations in Teo’s agenda, along with other pressing issues such as climate change and telecommunications. The new government will need to address these challenges while navigating the complex geopolitical landscape of the region.
