The Sindh High Court has directed the federal government and the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) to ensure uninterrupted internet access until February 8, when the general elections are scheduled to take place in the country. The directive came in response to a petition filed by lawyer and independent candidate Jibran Nasir, who argued against the “unconstitutional” internet outages that have occurred in recent days. Nasir’s petition also sought the immediate restoration of access to social media platforms and the suspension of any directives restricting access to social media until the general elections. The court’s order also issued directives for “smooth and uninterrupted mobile internet and broadband services to have access to social media platforms/websites.” Nasir confirmed the court’s decision on social media and emphasized the impact of the internet outages on the ability of political parties and independent candidates to reach out to voters. He also highlighted the financial losses and violation of fundamental human rights caused by the internet disruptions.
