The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has approved a resolution sponsored by Pakistan that upholds the right to self-determination for occupied peoples. Ambassador Munir Akram called it a “beacon of hope” for Kashmiris and Palestinians. The resolution reaffirms the right to self-determination for peoples under colonial, foreign, and alien occupation. It was recommended by the General Assembly’s Third Committee and has been tabled by Pakistan since 1981. The resolution, co-sponsored by 64 countries, calls for an immediate cessation of foreign military intervention and occupation, as well as acts of repression and discrimination. It also highlights the plight of refugees and displaced persons and urges the Human Rights Council to address violations resulting from foreign military intervention. The resolution requests the Secretary-General to report to the next session of the General Assembly on this question.
