UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has stated that the plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is proving to be effective in deterring individuals from coming to the UK. In response to an influx of asylum seekers entering the Republic of Ireland from Northern Ireland, Dublin is considering amending laws to allow for the return of asylum seekers to the UK.

Minister of Justice Helen McEntee of Ireland is set to visit London to discuss the new returns policy with British Home Secretary James Cleverly. The decision to amend the law comes after a recent high court ruling in Ireland that the designation of the UK as a “safe third country” for returning asylum seekers breached EU law.

Prime Minister Simon Harris of Ireland emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity of the migration system in Ireland and stated that the country’s rules-based system must be applied firmly and fairly. The UK’s Rwanda bill, which aims to prevent asylum seekers from entering the UK through small boats over the English Channel, recently passed its final parliamentary hurdle despite some challenges.
