Poliovirus found in five environmental samples in Pakistan

The Ministry of Health spokesperson reported that the poliovirus was discovered in sewage water samples from Quetta. Additionally, samples from Karachi Malir, Peshawar, Hub, and Tank also tested positive for the poliovirus. The spokesperson highlighted the strength of the polio program’s surveillance system and emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating polio through effective measures and an integrated strategy in high-risk areas. It was also emphasized that parents should ensure their children receive the polio vaccine during every immunization campaign. In response to the recent report of polio cases, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar directed the formulation of an emergency polio eradication plan and the launch of integrated programs in high-risk union councils. The prime minister also stressed the importance of monitoring polio vaccination campaigns using modern technology and expressed regret that the disease still exists in Pakistan and Afghanistan despite global efforts to eradicate it.
