Pakistan has reiterated its strong commitment to the ‘One China Policy’ in response to Taiwan’s presidential election. The Foreign Office spokesperson stated that Pakistan’s policy on Taiwan is consistent, clear, and principled, as Taiwan is considered an inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China. The spokesperson also emphasized Pakistan’s adherence to the One China policy and called for non-interference in the domestic affairs of all countries in line with the principles of the UN Charter. This response came after William Lai Ching-te of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was declared the winner in Taiwan’s presidential election, despite warnings from China. Beijing, which claims Taiwan as its territory, responded by stating that it would not change the “inevitable trend of China’s reunification.” Lai vowed to defend the island from China’s “intimidation,” and Taiwan’s foreign ministry called on Beijing to respect the election results and engage in positive cross-strait interactions.
