Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi delivered a speech from prison, read by her children, expressing her belief that the Iranian people will triumph over the government’s authoritarianism. The Norwegian Nobel committee awarded Mohammadi the prize for her non-violent fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her advocacy for human rights. Her children collected the prize on her behalf in Oslo, as she is serving multiple sentences in Iran’s Evin prison. Despite her imprisonment, Mohammadi emphasized the power of resistance and non-violence in bringing about change. She also called for international civil society to support Iranian civil society in their struggle for freedom. The Iranian government has accused the Nobel committee of meddling in human rights issues, but Mohammadi’s speech highlighted the need for global support in the face of government repression.
