The National Press Club (NPC) has written to the Islamabad police requesting the removal of a Baloch rights camp near its premises. Baloch protesters are holding a sit-in organized by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) against enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings. Despite harsh weather and pressure from law enforcement agencies, the camp has been established since December 22 and continues to attract more participants. The organizers have accused the police of harassment and profiling, as well as registering first information reports against their supporters. The NPC’s letter explains that the sit-in and security requirements are impeding the club’s events, local businesses, and residents. Activist Dr Mahrang Baloch expressed disappointment with the response from the Islamabad administration and announced that the movement would announce its next step in a press conference on Tuesday at 2pm. Journalists also condemned the letter and expressed their disapproval. Veteran journalist Hamid Mir commented that the letter had created a rift in the unity of journalists. Human Rights Commission of Pakistan co-chairperson Munizae Jahangir questioned why the Baloch community could not protest at the press club and condemned all kinds of pressure against them. Senior journalist Matiullah Jan said the development was “incomprehensible and deserving of condemnation.”
