The Islamic State (IS) militant group has claimed responsibility for the two bomb blasts in Kerman, southeastern Iran, that killed nearly 100 people at a memorial service for a slain military commander. Iranian authorities have said that security forces have arrested 11 people suspected of being involved in the attacks, with two people detained in Kerman and nine others in other parts of Iran. The bombings are the deadliest in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution and were part of a tense environment in the region, as they happened during Israel’s offensive against Hamas in Gaza. The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for other attacks in Iran in the past, including an attack in 2022 that killed 15 people. President Ebrahim Raisi has vowed that Iranian forces will decide the place and time to take action in response to the attacks.
