Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has rejected the latest peace efforts, vowing to continue the nine-month war between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). RSF head Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo had agreed to a ceasefire proposed by civilian groups, but al-Burhan refused to agree, citing the RSF’s history of unfulfilled promises and committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in West Darfur and the rest of Sudan. The United States has accused both the army and RSF of war crimes, and it says the RSF is also responsible for crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing. Al-Burhan also criticized leaders of African countries for welcoming Dagalo as a statesman during visits this week. He urged Sudanese people to join the military in fighting the RSF, which he accused of causing popular resistance and ransacking farming villages. Al-Burhan also warned of the threat of falling under “bondage and colonialism,” in an apparent reference to the United Arab Emirates, which the army accuses of supporting the RSF.
